With all that is going on in the world today and being home more than normal I decided to clean out my workshop. Besides finding treasures that I forgot I had, I also found I had lots of scrap wood. To try and get rid of some of my scraps I started messing around trying to make a design with the wood. I made up the design as I went along and this was the end result.

I went through my scrap wood pile and took out some of the straight pieces of wood.

Screw the frame together

To make this wall hanging it is easier to build the frame first. I went with a square because because it would be easier and I had enough wood already cut to the same size. My wall hanging was 1m square. To join the frame together I used a pocket hole jig. Using the pocket hole jig drill two holes on both sides of the 2 longer pieces of wood.

The longer pieces are then screwed into the shorter pieces to form your square.

For added strength you can add some wood glue before you screw the frame together. The longer pieces are then screwed into the shorter pieces to form your square.

I found it was easier to start with a cross in the middle of the design. That would give me something to build upon. Because my design is a square all my angles will be 45 degrees and will all fit together.

To cut my angles for the corners, I used a triangle ruler. I put the ruler in the corner and marked the shape with a pencil. To cut the angles I used a drop saw set at 45 degrees.

Making the center square

Cut 4 pieces of wood the same size and cut both ends at a 45-degree angle.

Add some wood glue and clamp with a corner clamp. So I could carry on and not wait for the glue to dry, I used a nail gun to secure the wood.

It is a good idea to mark the center of your wood and add a pencil mark to keep the design straight. The inside square will match up with those lines.

All the other shapes inside the design were just strips of wood that were cut at 45-degree angles. I set up a stop block on the drop saw to make sure all the pieces were cut the same size. Here you can use your imagination and cut different shapes to decorate your wall hanging. All the angles were glued and nailed the same as the square above.

Once you are happy with the layout of the design, it is time to glue it all together.

I did start glueing the wood pieces in place, then I changed my mind and thought it would be easier to paint it as I went along. To glue the wood in place I used wood glue and a nail gun to hold the wood in place while the glue dried. I started with the bottom layer first. Once the paint was dry the next layer was added.

When it came to adding the smaller pieces I did try using the nail gun, but I found it left marks that were very visible. So for these I used a hot glue gun. These will not budge if you use a good quality glue in the gun.

Seal the wood

Once all the pieces have been glued in place and painted the hanging needs to be sealed. I have never had much luck added polyurethane to a project like this without getting runs of poly. So i took the easy way out and used a gloss spray sealer. I added 2 coats.

And that is my wall hanging completed.

This wall hanging was so easy to made and your design is only as limited as your imagination. This wall hanging is hard to cost because I used all recycled wood and the paint and other materials I already had at home.

I did originally made the wall hanging to go inside my house. I hung it outside to take some pictures and found this was the perfect place for it. So it has found a new home under my pergola outside.

Looking for a new project check out this LED Pet memorial plaque. What a great way to remember our Fur Babies that have passed away.

Looking for a great way to entertain the family in these difficult times. Why not make this great horse racing game. It can be adapted to a smaller size to be played at a dinner table. This is a really fun game for all ages.

Why not show the finished product at the beginning? It makes following the directions so much easier.
