Old metal wire garden fencing can be found at vintage stores and secondhand shops. To enjoy it's nostalgic style, you can easily create these Vintage Garden Fencing Squares with a little cutting and bending. They're fun for outdoor porch decor, indoor home decor, or special event decorating. Make sure you pin for when you come across a roll of fencing (or maybe you already have some in the garage;)

Gather Your Materials

You'll need a roll of scallop-topped vintage wire garden fencing along with a bolt cutter or wire cutter. You'll also want a pair of gloves and a channellock pliers. The pictures will be easier to follow than explaining the process:

Cut Your Wire Fence

Cut your metal fencing like in the picture above. You'll want to have 8 full scallops at the top, plus some of the ends free to weave back through.

Bend Wire to Create Corners

Using a scrap board, bend 4 corners of the square. Each side should be a complete scallop and you bend in the middle of the next scallop on either side.

Here's what it should look like when you have all the corners bent. Now to close up the sides.

Weave wires together to close side seam

With a needle nose pliers, untwist the twisted ends about 1-2". Wrap these around the middle scallop end hanging down.

Tuck the last end of the last scallop into the corner.

Wrap loose ends and cut off extra

At all the joints, squeeze shut tightly and cut off any extra in order to not have any sharp parts out.

Finish off the bottom

There are 2 ways to finish off the bottom, depending on how you want to use these vintage fencing squares. 1st-cut a 6" square of wood, bend the ends below it and hammer in U shaped staples to adhere (you may need to pre-drill holes). This option is best if you want to have a flat surface for a candle or vase to set on.

Second Option to finish off base

The second option is to simple cross the end wires across and bend together. The 4 corner wires can be bent back up at the corner. This option is best if you want to line the fence squares with moss or cocoa liner for planting.

Enjoy decorating with your vintage fencing squares
