How To Paint Your Front Door

To paint your front door you will need a few tools and of course, paint. I chose Clarke & Kensington Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint in Hidden River. I used a small angled brush and small roller. You may also need painters tape. Before going any further I took a wet rag and wiped down the door to remove any dust and debris.

I chose to use painters tape to protect the hardware on my door. Ideally you'd remove the hardware, but my hardware is old and worn already, so I opted to tape it off. I used JB Weld to patch holes where the numbers previously were. I had previously relocated the numbers to a post on our front porch.

If your door is not flat, you will have to use your brush to hit all the spots your roller won't hit. I like to dip my brush in the can and wipe excess off on the sides of the can. If you have too much paint on your brush things can get messy very quickly.

Your first coat does not have to be perfect, but it should be even. Once you've edged in, take your lightly coated roller and have at it. I like to go slow with the roller to reduce paint splatter. If you do have paint splatter, no worries! A rag or baby wipe used will work to wipe it up.

I left my first coat to dry for about half an hour. Once it was dry I started the process over again. Edging in and then using the roller. When you are finished, peel off your painters tape before the paint dries. In some cases, the painters tape will peel the paint off if you allow it to dry for too long.

Giving your front door a fresh coat of paint is an easy, inexpensive way to change things up. This color is so refreshing and even makes our old hardware look better!
