You know that hall closet that ends up collecting junk until it becomes unusable? Take back the space and create a functional and adorable mud nook.

First, I removed the doors and any existing shelving. You can fill screw holes with wood putty or leave them if you want the option to replace the door one day.

Fresh paint goes a long way even in a closet – I choose a bright white.

To frame for a lower shelf, I measured 2 ½” from the floor in a couple spots on each wall then used a level and ruler to create a guide line. I cut 1” boards to fit around the perimeter of the closet and secured them into studs with 2” wood screws.

I bought a piece of finished MDF to use as the lower shelf and had it cut to size in store. MDF is sturdy, inexpensive and prefinished in white so this was the best choice for this project.

I added wallpaper in-between the two shelves for a cute accent.

I painted the existing upper shelf the same white as the walls. We also added a support bar under the bottom shelf for extra safety with small children.

Hooks and baskets add storage and this space is complete!
