These wooden Orbs are great for a centerpiece! They look modern yet rustic with a slight touch of industrial, which I love! You can make a trio, or even a single. Both options look fantastic!

Gather your items

To make a trio of orbs, you'll need two of each 5", 7" and 9" wooden embroidery hoops (or 4", 6" and 8", 8", 10" and 12", any set of 3 different sizes will work) . Each embroidery hoop includes 2 wooden hoops, one hoop with the metal tightening screw, and the other is a solid hoop. To make an orb, you need 4 hoops of the same size. There are two ways to make these orbs... All of the axis points meet in the same spot (this tutorial), or where you have a hoop going horizontal through the orb (I'll give brief directions at the end).

You'll also need wood stain (I used Minwax dark walnut), rags or paper towels, and a hot glue gun with glue sticks

Stain the rings

For each embroidery hoop, loosen the tightening screw to allow the solid hoop to fall out. Stay organized and keep all of the same sized hoops together. You should now have a total of 12 separate hoops in 3 different sizes, 4 of each size. Put on a pair of gloves, and then dip a rag or paper towel into the wood stain, and then rub the stain into the wooden hoop.

Wipe off excess stain

You don't want to leave excess stain on the hoops to dry. So using a clean rag or paper towel, remove any excess stain

Position the hoops

Once you've stained all of the hoops and allowed it to dry for 2 hours, you can start assembling the orbs.

Take one set (4 hoops- 2 with screw, 2 solid) of hoops (I start with the smallest size and work my way up), and place the hoop with the tightening screw inside the solid hoop. Position the inside hoop so that it's directly in the middle of the solid hoop

Glue hoops together

Make note of where the outside hoop sits, then move it to the side and place a bead of hot glue. Carefully lift up the hoop as you move it back into place over the hot glue bead and press down to secure. Flip over and repeat these steps for the other side

Add another hoop

After the hot glue has dried and the first two hoops are secured, add in the 2nd hoop with the tightening screw. Position it inside the other 2 hoops, meeting at the same axis points. Move the hoop to the side, place a bead of hot glue, and carefully move the hoop back over top of the hot glue bead and secure. Flip over, and repeat for the other side

Last hoop

Position the last hoop inside the others, again meeting at the same axis points. Add your hot glue bead and secure.

Tighten and Repeat

Now that the orb is assembled and secure, you can tighten the screws as much as possible. This also helps to secure the hoops.

Repeat these steps to assemble the remaining orbs

Different style orb

To make the orb with a hoop going horizontally through the orb, you would assemble two sets of hoops...each set is made up of one solid hoop and one with the tightening screw. Hot glue the two hoops together just like in the step above. Repeat for the other set.

Now that you have the 2 sets of hoops, position one set inside the other set. This takes a bit of wiggling and adjusting. Once you have then positioned correctly, hot glue the two sets together to secure. You also may need to reglue spots that came loose while adjusting. Allow that to dry for 15 minutes and then tighten the screws. Now you have a different style orb 😁

This orb was made with 12" hoops. Add a plant in it for a beautiful centerpiece

I'm thinking paint the hoops in bright colors and glue something small to the bottom, put battery lights in them and put them on the patio! Bright in the day and light at night. Very nice idea!
