I picked up a lamp from my local thrift store for my daughters bedroom, and while I loved the style of it, the shade was a little plain and boring. So I decided to give it a little makeover. ✨

BEFORE

I had a rug in her room that I loved the pattern of, so I used it as inspiration.

Inspiration

I started by removing the shade from the lamp. I then measured around the top of shade, divided it by 6 and put a small pencil marking at each section. I did the same for the bottom and then drew a line from the top markings to the bottom ones. I then measured the length of the shade, divided that by 3 and then drew lines around the shade on each marking.

Marking the shade

I used these markings as my starting point, as the repeating shape of the pattern I was using would be the size of the ‘boxes’ drawn on the shade.

Next, I divided the ‘boxes’ into 4 (top to bottom) and marked them out with pencil. These extra lines were going to be my guide to keep the shape right and ensure they would all match up. To make it perfect I could have drawn more lines horizontally but at this point I felt pretty confident getting the shapes right with the lines I had.

Markings as a guide.

Next I started drawing the shapes. I found that once I had a couple done, it was quite easy to do the rest as I used them as a guide to get the next one in line and so on.

Drawing the shapes.

I didn’t worry about being too perfect as I was going to go back later and fix any that were out of line.

Once I was finished drawing the shapes I then went over them with a metallic gold Sharpie pen.

I took my time with this part as there was no room for error being a permanent marker.

Tracing over the shapes with sharpie

Once I had finished tracing the entire pattern, I used an eraser to get rid of all my pencil lines.

And that’s it! It was finished. 👌🏻

This was such a cheap little makeover, I had the sharpie pen, pencil, eraser etc all at home already so it didn’t actually cost me anything.

Now my daughter has a beautiful lamp to match her rug! ✨
