Wood DIY Garage Shelves

We have been in need of some shelves in our garage for some time. We had the black plastic ones, but after a while they started to bend and couldn't handle the weight of our items. So my husband got to work to build some more permanent wood shelving.

The shelving didn’t need to be that big. Just something for the corner to keep things out of the way.

Tool Supply List

Tape measure

Level

3 inch wood Screws

2 1/2 Inch self tapping wood screws

Pocket Hole Jig

Tool Supply List

Saw

Drill

5/32 Drill bit (Bits are HART brand)

T25 bit

Wood Supply List

4 x 8 feet OSB Board

(We had Lowe’s cut it down to 16 in 33 in feet for us)

Wood Supply List

6 - 2 in x 4 in x 8 ft DF Stud

Step 1

First you will cut out all of the wood.

Wood Cuts

I forgot to take a picture of the wood pile after I cut everything out.

You will cut

8 - 33 inch long strips from the Studs

and

2 - 6 Feet Long strips

Wood Cuts

8 - 13 inches long

Step 2

With the 8 - 13 inches strips you will now use your Pocket Hole Jig to place the holes in for drilling into the wall. You only need to make pocket holes on one side of the board.

Step 3

Now you are going to take the 5/32 Drill bit and the 33 inch boards and pre-drill 3 holes (one in the middle and one the left and right sides) into FOUR of the boards.

Step 4

Measure out the height that you want for the shelves.

We went with

20 inches apart

We used the blue painters tape to mark where we will be placing the shelves.

Step 5

Start drilling 4 of the 33in long studs on the wall.

Use your level to ensure it is level.

All 4 are up!

Step 6

Now just trust me with this next step.

Using the 2 1/2 Inch self tapping wood screws, screw in the remaining 4 boards on top of the boards you just hung on the wall.

NOTE: You just need two screws in each board.

Step 7

Now take the 2 - 6 foot boards and drill them on top of the 4 (now 8) boards.

It will look like this.

Step 8

Now remove the 2 screws that you placed in the 33 in. boards.

The frame should come off like this.

Now you have the other half of the shelving frame. It is a perfect match to the studs drilled into the wall.

Step 9

Take your 13 in studs and with the end that has the pocket holes, drill into the stub on the wall.

Step 10

Now attach the frame to the 13 inch studs.

Step 11

Place the OSB Board 33 inch long boards one each shelf.

And you are done!

The shelf is small enough, its not taking up to much space in the garage, yet big enough it holds a lot!
