Burlap is a fabric that you can use even if you can't sew. If you want a farmhouse or rustic look, burlap is your fabric.

Here's how you can make your own burlap table runner in just a few minutes. I painted a stripe on mine, but you could also leave the runner just solid.

This is a great project for beginners or if you've never tried painting fabric before. Click here to see more of my beginner DIY projects.

The first step is to measure your table and decide if you want the runner to flow off the end of the table or stop before the end. I made my runner 14 inches wide and 10 inches longer than my table.

Measure fabric
Cut fabric

Once you have the runner cut to the right size, iron it. Burlap frays on the edges, but it's supposed to. Pull a string on the side until you get the desired amount of fraying.

Now you will want to brush a thin layer of Mod Podge on the edge to prevent it from fraying any further.

You are finished if you don't want to paint. I added a black stripe down the center of my runner with some leftover paint. To do this, measure from the center of the runner to the desired stripe width. Apply painters tape to the fabric to outline the stripe.

Add some water to your paint if you are using chalk paint. Paint the burlap using a bristle brush. As soon as your are finished, remove the tape.

Paint fabric and remove tape.

To cure the paint you can apply heat with an iron (put fabric between the paint and the iron).
