Creating an Cost Effective Beverage Station in a Busy Home
I was working with a client and created a beverage station. Below are steps on how we created this space. Her goal was to make it user-friendly for her young kids and husband with no cost.
This cabinet had a lot of stuff that could be placed somewhere else. Kids could not reach the plates, so they needed to ask their parents—a time-consuming task when the kids could get their plates.
These items were pulled from other areas of the kitchen so they could be reviewed and added to the cabinet. Some were added and some were donated or trashed depending on if it was worn or chipped.
We created a beverage station storage to keep the cabinet organized and now has a purpose.
After we emptied the cabinet and the unwanted items were removed, we added tea, coffee, all the tools, mugs and moved all the beverage items(tea kettle, coffee makers, etc...) to the counter under the cabinet.
Visit our blog to see the printable " How to Make a Fabulous Beverage Station." It includes the list of items to add to the beverage station.
We used the right cabinet because everyone in the house was right handed. The cluttered counter was now transformed into a useable, and helpful place for people to get their coffee or tea.
Read more on the blog about this project and the other things we added to the kitchen to make the morning routine an easier one for this family.

It will be easier to keep the countertop clean and to catch drips and spills if everything was put on top of a tray.
Having a few mugs on hooks hanging from the bottom of the upper cabinet would eliminate having to open the cabinet door all the time just to get a mug.

While I love the ideas above, the owner did not want any additional items out exact for the coffee maker/tea. It wasn't a large area and if you added tray or even mug organizers, there would be no place for anything else.

1/ Neither the coffee or the tea are located where they are handy. To access either one of these, it is necessary to open the cabinet door, and reach up to the second shelf, remove the container to take out your choice, then put everything back in reverse order. Below are examples of some storage ideas that would increase convenience, and make the presently unused space more efficient.
2/ I was not suggesting to add a mug organizer on the counter as yes, it would take up more of the counter space. I was referring to ideas such as mug hooks that would make use of the vertical space between the upper cabinet and the counter.
3/ The tray containing the individual smaller items need not, and should not be larger than the amount of counter space than what is taken up by all the items in their present arrangement as yes, this would reduce the remaining counter space available for use.

Those are great suggestions and I have used them in the past with other clients. Note: these shelves in the cabinet were fixed and using the items above would create gaps under them that would be unusable. Plus, this client was not able to purchase any additional items at the time. So we made do with what we had. Thanks for the suggestions though.
