One thing everyone always needs in their kitchen is something to wipe your hands on or to grab hot pots with. And so, this hanging kitchen towel came to be.One-half towel and the other half potholder, it’s as simple as that. But that’s exactly what makes it so practical! It’s the two of your most often needed kitchen tools combined into one. Plus, you can hang it on your fridge or top cabinet so that you can grab it quickly and easily whenever you need to!

This simple project takes you no more than ten or twenty minutes to finish, regardless of your skill level, which makes it a great afternoon sewing activity. Check out our tutorial for step-by-step instructions on how to make your own DIY hanging kitchen towel.

Find the middle of the towel

You can do this in two ways.

The first method is to fold the towel in half and press it flat. After that, when you open up the towel, you’ll notice a crease that will go exactly along the middle.

The second method is to just measure out where the middle is and then draw along it.

Gather the towel

Use a needle and a thread to make a gathering stitch. To do that, make a running stitch along the centerline of the towel. The stitches should be about 0.5 inches away from each other.

Hold one end of the thread hanging from the middle of the towel, and pull the fabric in the opposite direction. Knot the thread and cut off the excess when you gather the fabric enough.

Keep in mind that you’re doing this so that the middle of the towel becomes equal in width to the potholder. When you finish gathering, check the measurements and see if everything is alright.

Find the middle of the potholder

Do it just like you did with the towel. Either fold and press the potholder to make a crease or measure out the middle and draw a line along it.

Place the potholder onto the towel, aligning their centerlines. Secure them like that with pins or clips.

Sew the potholder to the hanging kitchen towel

Sew across the centerline and join the towel with the potholder.

Open up the whole thing, set the towel on one side, and the potholder on the other.

Sew the button

As a finishing touch, handsew the button to the spot where the loop of the potholder goes when folded.

Hang and use

Hang the towel near your oven or on the handle of the oven. Use and enjoy!

(OPTIONAL) Sew some more towels to give as gifts

Someone gave me one of these as a gift several years ago and they are so useful that I ended up buying potholders to use with new kitchen towels I had and making several. These are great in that they're so easy to button on to a stove handle or towel ba and stay put. Your instructions are excellent.
