How to Make a DIY Fish Bowl Snowman

I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but I always get into the Holiday spirit around this time each year. This weekend Vivienne and I decorated the entire house (holiday home tour coming soon) and then found time to make this fun and easy DIY fish bowl snowman.

Wanna make one of your own? It’s super easy!

Here’s the supply list (not all items shown):

  • 3 small glass round fish bowls (2-3 varying sizes)
  • option 1, option2, option 3
  • Faux snow
  • 4-5 black buttons ( or these)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Black ribbon
  • Plaid ribbon
  • Mini top hats  (or tin can, canister top, black paint)
  • Carrot nose (or glue lid top)
  • Miniature trees, deer, etc (optional)

The best part is most of these items can be found at the dollar store, so this project is super affordable.

Take your three fish bowls and fill them with your faux snow. You can choose to do this two ways.

1. Fill all the way to the top

OR

2. Fill halfway and add in your miniature items.

I chose to follow through with the snow only option.

Once full, I moved onto creating the top hat.

If you have mini top hats you can skip these steps.

You can make the hat in a number of ways. I like to use repurposed items from around the house in as many projects as I can. I found an unused canister lid and a small tin can, and spray painted them black.

Once dry I took my hot glue gun and ribbon, and got to work. I wrapped the bottom half of the tin can in the plaid ribbon, and the canister edge and tin can top in the black ribbon.

In case you’re wondering my impatient self touched the canister top before it was dry, so I decided to go over it in acrylic paint.

While the lid was drying, I took my fish bowls and started to stack them (it would have been ideal to have three different sized bowls, but all I found at the store were two different sizes. I made them work).

With the three bowls stacked, I used the plaid ribbon to make a scarf. To do this I simply hot glued the ribbon around the top bowl, but made sure to leave it removable.

Next, I added the canister lid and tin can on top of the top bowl (you can see I did this step before I decided to fill all bowls with faux snow).

It felt like something was missing, so I decided to hot glue some black buttons on for eyes and buttons.

Determined to find something else in the house to use for the nose, I searched high and low, which took longer than the entire project start to finish, ha!

I found an old blue glue bottle cap, and decided to paint it orange (too bad I didn’t have an Elmer’s top that’s already orange…that would have been much easier).

Once somewhat dry, (remember I’m majorly impatient) I hot glued the nose on.

Finally, I stacked the top hat back on, and my DIY fish bowl snowman was complete.

I think this ‘lil DIY fish bowl snowman guy turned out super cute, and if it weren’t for my makeshift top hat and carrot nose projects it would have taken five minutes from start to finish, ha! Not too shabby.
