I've been looking for a sign to put above the bed in our guest room for awhile. I wanted something with pine trees, texture and dimension.

Everything I was finding looked like Christmas decor and wasn't as neutral as I would like. So, I decided to try creating something myself.

MATERIAL LIST

  • 1/4" Plywood
  • Premade sign board/frame

*My exact sign board is from Hobby Lobby- White washed sign with frame* Size: 20.87 x 1.18 x 27.95 inches

  • Wood glue
  • Stain
  • Paint
  • Sandpaper (80 & 180 grit)
  • Cardboard *optional for patterns
  • Table saw

I made a few cardboard tree patterns because I was having my husband help me rip the plywood trees down on the table saw. I thought this would be helpful in showing him what I wanted.

Once you draw your trees onto your 1/4" plywood, it's time to cut.

Safety first...do not use the table saw to make your trees if you are not comfortable. A jigsaw or miter saw would work too.

Once you have your trees cut, sand down the rough edges.

As you can see my plywood is already painted white. That is because I'm using plywood leftover from a shiplap project.

FYI- You can finish your trees in any way or color you choose. There is no right or wrong way.

After sanding all my trees I started to play with the tree placement on my sign.

I wanted a more weathered look on some of my trees so I used a gray and black stain to "age" my plywood.

If you want to do the same, use the 80 grit sandpaper to rough up the front of the tree before adding stain.

Once the paint/stain on your trees is dry and you have the placement down, it's time to glue them in place.

I used wood glue. You could also use hot glue.

Hold your tree down for a minute to help set the glue and tree in place.

If glue seeps out, use a toothpick to clean the wet glue off your sign.

When placing the top layer of trees on the bottom layer you will need to mark where they sit. This way you know where to place the glue.

I lightly traced my trees on top of the bottom layer of trees with a pencil.

Then I added glue inside those lines.

Once all the trees are glued in place, I set heavy objects and dumbbells on the top layer of trees for 12 hours.

After the glue dried, I noticed there was some on the sign board. I chipped of the excess glue with a knife.

Here you can see the dimension of the trees in this side view of the finished sign.

Success! This is exactly the tree scene I was after.

FYI- It could easily be turned into a mountain scene as well.
