Change the Style of Your Couch

I don’t think I can say I have one design style. It’s constantly evolving and I love to mix it all together. When I bought this sofa, I knew I loved everything about it. I’ve never been a fan of trim nails but the tufting, shape and color, had me sold! Not to mention, it was 4x cheaper than a similar model.

Well fast forward two years, and I’ve gone from not being a fan to trim nails to hating them. My style is currently screaming modern, contemporary and mid-century modern (in small doses).

So what did I do? I gave this beautiful sofa an upgrade I didn’t even know it needed.

This is what I am starting with. Let’s change it!

First step is making sure that the nail heads are solely decorative. Sometimes these nail heads are functional by holding material down. So I’m feeling under the couch for staples or nails that could be securing the fabric down. The best way to do this would be to flip the couch over and visualize, but this worked just fine!

Use your staple or tack remover to remove the nail heads.

I had a bowl nearby to immediately put the nails in.

This is the exact staple puller I am using. I’m using a staple puller because tack remover was sold out. Either is okay to use. I do like this for three reasons. 1. The prongs allow you to get between the nail. 2. The beveled front gives you leverage to lift the nail out. 3. It only cost about $5.

It’s already so much better!! I could have stopped here, but that’s no fun!

Next, flip the couch over so you can access the legs.

Turn the legs counter clockwise to unscrew. I don’t know what I was expecting but I couldn’t believe how cheap and plastic-y (I don’t think that’s a word but you know what I’m saying, right?) these legs were. I mean, I knew it performed it’s job well but this also confirmed, adding real wood legs was the right decision.

Take the new anchors, place it into the old leg hole and hammer it in.

Keep going until it is flush with the couch.

Screw the anchors down so all is sturdy.

When screwing the new legs in, you have to hold the couch fabric aside. You want to make sure the legs are flat and flush so that they don’t wobble.

Here’s another view. If you need to trim the fabric, make sure you trim in front of the staples so the fabric doesn’t unravel/get loose from the couch.

Here it is, all screwed in.

Once all the legs are on, flip the couch over and you’re all done!

Brilliant and LOUV it. My only question is that the couch originally had a leg in the center -- does the couch act okay with it removed? I ask because I see furniture with "middle legs" and I find it annoying, I wonder how often it is okay to remove them? Great update!
