I love cake stands. Cake stands of all types.

Antique, glass, wood, metal...they all appeal to me, but most of the time the price does not.

So, why not attempt to make my own?

FYI- This project could also be an excellent plant stand. You gotta love a dual purpose project.

Material List:

  • 12" x 12" wooden round
  • Metal flower pot
  • Wood Glue
  • White paint
  • Gray stain
  • Paint brush
  • Paper towel
  • Rubber gloves

I wanted to make my wooden round look more like the metal flower pot I used as my cake stand base.

Using a paper towel, I stained my wooden round board gray. Wiping off any excess.

While the stain dried, I got my "white wash" paint supplies ready.

I knew this project wouldn't take much paint so I stirred up my paint and used the amount on the paint stick for my whole project. Once stirred, put the stick on a paper plate.

Get a second paper plate and add a small amount of water.

For my white wash application, I dipped my brush in the paint making sure to use just a small amount of paint.

TIP: It's easier to add more paint than to try and take it off.

With a small amount of paint on your brush, dip your brush in the water on the 2nd plate. On the dry area of your plate wipe off some of the paint and water.

Then lightly brush over the gray stain. Use a light hand. You can always add more if needed to get the look you are after.

TIP: Start on the bottom of your stand to get the feel for your white wash technique.

Don't forget to white wash the sides.

Once you get your white wash to look the way you want, let it completely dry before attaching the base.

To add the base, turn your wooden board over so the top of your stand is facing down on your work surface.

I measured the top of my base to the edge of my top all around and figured out where to place it.

Once I figured the spacing out, I traced around the top of the base. That allowed me to remove the base so I could add the glue and have a guide when setting it back down.

I applied wood glue to the edge of the base.

Then I lined up the base with my traced circle and applied pressure for 1 minute. Then I flipped the cake stand over and set a 10# dumbbell on top.

I let the glue dry with the added weight for a few hours.

This is the side view of the cake stand.

Finally, I have an affordable cute cake stand and I love it!

FYI- Don't forget this could be used as a small plant stand.
