After moving into a home with a little more space, we quickly realized that our decor felt really small. We wanted some larger pieces of art but weren't willing to pay the price for artwork that large. Instead of purchasing a piece of art, we could make our own that we would completely love, for a fraction of the cost!

I am no artist, but thankfully with the help of Stencil Revolution, I don't need to be an artist! Creating our own custom framed artwork could be done with stencils!

To create this project, I used:

  • Two stencils from Stencil Revolution
  • Plywood in the sizes I wanted the art to be
  • Plywood for the sides of the frame
  • Paint in the various colors you want to paint the stencil
  • Paint for the frame
  • Paint for the background of the artwork
  • Stencil paintbrushes
  • Painter's tape
  1. Cut the plywood the sizes you need.

You will want the plywood the size you want your art to be. You will also want to cut 4 pieces of plywood the size of the sides of the artwork. Paint the plywood the color that you will want to be your background color. If you really want the color to pop, you may want to prime the wood first.

2. Line up the stencil and tape

Lay the stencil down where you will want it and tape it into place. Begin stenciling the pattern, one color at a time. Dab your brush into the paint and dab off some of the paint onto the paint plate, before dabbing it on the stencil. This will help prevent bleeding.

3. Peel Stencil Off

After you have painted the entire stencil, peel the stencil off of the wood.

4. Stenciling with Multiple Colors

If you are stenciling a piece with multiple colors, work with one color at a time. Stencil all of the spots on the stencil that you will use a particular color, then move onto your next color.

5. Creating Custom Stenciled Art

Peel back the stencil, after you have stenciled every color you want on your artwork.

6. Frame the artwork.

Once your artwork is completely painted, paint the frame pieces the color you want them to be. Nail or glue them into place, framing your new, custom artwork!

I am so excited about how these art pieces turned out! The Stencil Revolution stencils are so high quality and very easy to work with. I love that I can continue to use these stencils for other projects, if I wanted them to coordinate with our new artwork as well.

I can't wait to think of more ways I can use my new Stencil Revolution stencils!

Any ideas on how to repair this foot molding? A shelf fell and damage it.
