I made this super cute pillow to use for Valentine’s Day.

It is a heart pillow with vintage buttons, and I want to show you how to make one.

Years ago when my daughter was in high school, she had this idea to use some of my vintage button collection to make pillows for Christmas gifts.

She purchased ready made pillows from a discount store and glued buttons in a grid pattern on the front of the pillow. She bought colors that went with the decor of the person receiving the gift. They turned out so cute!

I was cleaning out my office recently and realized how many buttons I have and it inspired me to use them to make a pillow for Valentine’s Day with them.

For this project, you will need …..

supplies

ready made pillow cover (or make your own)

buttons

glue gun

a pattern of a heart shape you want on your pillow

directions

To begin, you will want to draw the shape of your heart. I just used a sheet of paper, folded it in half and cut half of a heart shape using the fold of the paper. When you open the paper, it will have a perfect heart shape for you to use as your pattern.

Next, you will place the heart in the center of your pillow cover. This will give you a guide where you are going to place your buttons.

I poured buttons all around the heart shape. Then, I went through and picked out any buttons I didn’t like. You can see there are a few mixed in that weren’t neutral, and since that is the look I was going for, I pulled out any with color. If you don’t already have a stash of buttons, you can find ivory color in bulk  here.

Next, I straightened out the shape a bit and relocated buttons in places where I thought there were too many. Then, I pulled the pattern up and started gluing. I glued a base layer first, then started layering buttons on top. This helps fill in and also hides where you have glued them.

And, that’s it!

It does take a bit of time, but it is super easy. Even though I made mine to put out for Valentine’s Day, it will be cute anytime of year, since it is neutral colors.

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial and try one of your own!!

I love the look but have NEVER had luck with hot glue staying on anything for any length of time. Even Christmas balls on a wreath that are thin and light, never touched or moved pop off after a year.

The pillow ticking and heart shape are oh so pretty though.

That's a great idea! I just glued them to make the project a little faster. However, they have stayed on fine, because the pillow doesn't really get used or moved around, but the buttons sewn on would be really cute.
