Hey Friends, It’s DIY today and I am taking you through my DIY Sunburst Mirror Reimagined in black. As you might recall, I worked on a mirror for my daughter’s room a while back and I loved it so much that I am creating another one in a different color and different finishing.

Here are the supplies needed for my DIY Sunburst Mirror Reimagined.

12” Mirror

12” Wood Shims (5 packs; comes 42 in a pack)

8” Wood Shims (6 packs; comes 12 in a pack)

Wood Glue

Half Spheres

12” Floral Ring

Sander with sandpaper – optional

Picture Fastener – optional

Process:

Start out by making sections of for each “ray”. For this process you use 7 shims from the 12 inch bundle and 2 shims from the 8 inch bundle. Starting out with the first 12 inch shim, glue in descending order with the second one on each side about 1 inch below the first and repeat this 2 more times with the 12 inch shims and one 8 inch shim on either side. It should look like this when you are done.

Based on prior experience, I did 30 sections but ended up only needing 29 this time around.

Once each section dries, it is time to glue all sections together. I glued them in quadrants to made it more manageable. Once the quadrants dried, it was time to glue the 4 sections and attach the floral ring on the back side.

Tip: Place the floral ring in the center and mark with sharpie before applying glue. The marking allows you not to lose the center when applying the glue.

After this, place weights and leave it to dry for at least 24 hours. This allows the glue to bond properly.

The next step is to sand. Sanding gets rid of some of the rough edges and excess glue. Clean with a damp cloth after sanding to remove particles.

Tip: Working on the back side to glue is ideal. This prevents glue seepage from being visible on the front. Which could end up as an eyesore.

It is time for paint, I used black gloss spray paint and gave it one coat.

I also used the same paint for the half spheres that will be placed around the mirror edge.

Leave to dry for about 30mins and then attach the mirror. Using the same method as above, I used a silver sharpie to mark the mirror placement prior to attaching the glue. While it is drying, start fastening the the half wooden spheres around the mirror with glue.

Tip: Place spheres first to understand the spacing prior to affixing permanently to the mirror.

Leave to dry for 24 hours and it is ready for decorating.

Picture Fastener (Optional):

If you plan to hang the mirror, attach a picture fastener on the back. I personally prefer the saw tooth fastener. You will want to select wall anchors or hooks based on the weight of the mirror and your walls.

REVEAL:

The DIY Sunburst Mirror reimagined was such a fun project to work on. For about $50 you can get a statement piece that is sure to please.

For each "section" of 9, how far down from each other do you put them? Does that make sense? I've made 2 of these so far and for the life of me, cannot get the shims to meet in the middle. I can't seem to get it right. HELP! Yours is stunning!!!

Hi Torie, what kind of floral ring is it? I’ve never worked with one and am not sure to get the wire one or the mdf one? I ordered the mdf one because I don’t see how all those pieces could stick to a wire. Did I buy the wrong one? I bought the shims last night you were right they are much cheaper at Lowe’s. I had to buy quite a lot since I’m making one of these for me and one for my mother in law.

I am having a hard time getting my sections glued together. They keep separating.

How did you secure the sections while the glue sets?
