It’s funny how my decor taste is starting to change. What used to be a room with all white furniture is now turning into a room with moody eclectic vibes! I’m replacing the white painted furniture with darker colors and I’m loving it! Speaking of replacing white furniture, I’ve got a fun moody eclectic TV stand makeover for you today.

This TV stand has had a few different looks. When I first purchased it it had a real shabby farmhouse look. I loved it at first, but eventually I felt like it looked “dirty.” Then my style moved to a more refined modern farmhouse style. So I painted it all white and updated the pulls.

I eventually added an Iron Orchid Designs image transfer to the top of the TV stand. A few years ago I was all about the image transfers. Now I’m more about clean lines.

Here is what it looks like today.

Since I’m moving towards a more moody eclectic vibe with more vibrant colors and a more modern feel, I knew I needed to paint and replace the hardware.

Before I get to the actual TV stand makeover, I had to order some products.

I ordered some Cane Webbing from Etsy.

Next I purchased a Benjamin Moore paint in the color Stonecutter. I’m using the Benjamin Moore Advance paint line. It wanted a good latex enamel paint with good coverage and great leveling properties. I figured I would give this a try!

First I removed all the hardware.

I feel like it’s looking more modern already without that heavy hardware!

I had a few choices with the hinge hardware. I decided on a set of regular hinges that I could hide in the doors so all you would see is the spine.

Since I wanted to highlight the dark moody color and the webbing, I didn’t want the hardware to take away from the aesthetic of it (p.s. they aren’t attached yet).

Next I used spackling to fill the small nail holes where the old hardware was. I decided not to use wood putty because, in my experience, it’s harder to paint over. I might get some backlash on that but that’s my opinion.

It didn’t take long to fill those tiny nail holes. Now we wait for it to dry!

Next I sanded the entire tv stand. I used a coarser sand paper on the top (where the image transfer was) and finished with a finer sand paper. I used a fine sand paper to sand the spackle where the nail holes were.

Lastly I used a lint free cloth to clean the entire surface. You want to make sure all the dust particles are gone. Tack cloths work great too.

Time to prime!

Primer is really important to cover all the imperfections (and that image transfer) and to make sure there isn’t any bleed through (the old color or stains showing through the new paint). You can see more about how important primer is here.

I used a KILZ 3 premium primer. I love this primer because it’s known for not only it’s stain blocking formula, but also it’s odor blocking formula.

Above is the TV stand after two coats of primer. Doesn’t it look cleaner already?

Now for the fun part; paint!

Moody colors are all the rave these days. Do you know what I mean when I say “moody colors?” I mean dark and rich colors.

I love this color because it’s a mix of dark green and blue all in one!

The first coat is always a little scary looking.

Below is after the second coat with the new hardware.

It took two coats of paint but it’s finally looking good! I love the dark moody color against the brass knobs and hardware!

All that was left was to put the cane webbing on the front of the doors.

I used a staple gun and pulled the cane as tight as I could before I stapled it to the inside of the door.

Eeek, what do you think?

I’m in love with the new bold color and style.

My husband says it looks like it came out of the 1980’s. Well babe, styles and trends come full circle!

I’m thinking of adding a hanging swing in that corner where the fiddle leaf is. Wouldn’t that be cute?

Compared to the first two looks, this is gorgeous! Still not sure why you would have put a "market" sign on the top of the white version...Even for a "farmhouse look" that would've gone better on a kitchen wall above a cabinet...But like I said in the beginning, this is gorgeous and the chair caning looks fabulous in place of the glass...Love everything about it!

The caning really set it off! With the glass doors still in place, I thought, "Yeah, that's ok" but once you finished with the caning, it looked like a whole different piece. It was nice to see a farmhouse piece transition to something more traditional that could go with almost any style! Good job!
