I wanted to decorate the front porch for Valentines but I couldn't find exactly what I wanted to use. Because I loved the trio of red bells on the porch this past Christmas, the idea of using a trio of red hearts was born.So here is how to make a Wooden Triple Heart Swag.
First, draw out your pattern for the hearts. I used 3 different sizes.
Y'all know I love to recycle when possible. My husband found some left over lumber and helped by agreeing to cut the hearts using his new Scroll Saw. He then smoothed the edges with a belt sander. You can see more recycle & DIY ideas on this post.
Next, in order to age the wood, I used a quick 50/50 mixture of black paint and water as a stain. This dries quickly to speed up the project.
Just paint the wooden hearts with the 50/50 mixture and allow to dry.
The paint the hearts with your choice of colors. I used one coat red Chalk Paint to allow for a distressed heart appearance.
Then I sealed with a clear wax.
To hang the hearts, you will need small screw eyes and jute rope. You can drill a small pilot hole into the side of the heart so the screw eye can be easily attached.Tip: I used a nail & hammer to tap a small hole and it worked like a charm.
Because I wanted the hearts to hang slightly tilted, I placed the eye screws just on one side of the heart top.
You should to play around with the length of your jute rope, depending on how you want your hearts to hang. Be sure to leave plenty of excess rope until you have everything adjusted. Tie a knot at the top of your jute rope to connect the hearts together. If you feel you may use the hearts in other areas of you home, don’t cut off the excess and then you will have future options.
Here are the Triple Heart Swags finished. Two sets are easily hung from the vintage shutters beside the front door using these large S Hooks. If you'd like to see how I used them in the guest room Valentines Tour see this post.
