I wanted to add a focal piece to our living room so we decided to DIY a fireplace. The fireplace is in the center of the room and makes a big statement. Not only does the fireplace look pretty it is also a functional peace that provides warmth. A fireplace can be added to many different places in your home such as a living room, dining room or bedroom.

We started this project with a big blank wall. We mapped out the size for the fireplace and then removed the baseboard where the fireplace would be. We added boards to the wall using screws to work as supports for the fireplace. These 1X3 boards are attached to the studs in the wall.

2X4’s were used to create the sides of the fireplace. We built a rectangular box for the sides and added in a few 2X4 pieces in between for support. We attached the rectangular side pieces to the wood pieces on the wall with screws.

To create the face of the fireplace we screwed 2X4 together in the shape of a rectangle. We measured the size of the fireplace insert and created a small rectangle for the insert to sit in and to be screwed into. We also added a few support pieces underneath where the insert would sit.

We insured that the fireplace insert would fit in the intended spot.

We added a few love support pieces in the middle of the framed structure. We are mourning a TV on this fireplace so we needed to add a support block for that as well. We added a 2X8 board for the support for the Tv. We also added a support piece for the mantle. This fireplace will be covered in plywood which we started adding here.

we attached plywood to the sides of the fireplace and started adding plywood to the front. We left a hole because we are adding a Samsung frame tv which has a box to control the tv. This box will be on a ledge that we added inside this hole in the plywood. The tv will be mounted and cover the hole but will be be able to access the box if needed. We added 2X4 blocks to sit and attach the mantle to.

The rest of the plywood was add, the fireplace insert was installed and secured and we decided to add thin brick around the insert. To add the thin brick we attached cement backer board instead of plywood to this area. Using Loctite adhesive we attach each brick individually and then used grout. The brick part of the fireplace needed to sit for about 2 days to fully dry.

now we are adding the trim detail to the fireplace. We used 1x2 lattice molding to create the look we wanted and then attached the mantle. We used screws to attach the mantle to the fireplace.

Before painting fill the nail holes, sand and caulk the fireplace. We also made the hole for the tv smaller by adding more plywood. We painted the fireplace Sherwin Williams pure white and now it is complete.

Here is the fireplace with the tv mounted on it.

Here is the fireplace styled for the fall.

Great Idea and it looks very nice. I would imagine that the outlet there was used for the TV and Fireplace? At least that would make sense. LOL Great job.

Personally I think ever home should have a fire place. Not only are they pretty, they add heat to a home. Especially when the power is out. Unfortunately yours is an electric or propane. Its is still gorgeous and I love it, this winter has me very cranky. Its been so cold. 2021 snow storm after snow storm out west and into Texas and Mexico have been hit with a polar vortex and has caused many families to have no heat from the last ice storm. It bee one heck of a roller coaster.

I’d love to do this just to have a mantle lol.

so the heating appliance won’t affect heating up the tv?
