Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and my family is here for all of the lovey dovey stuff! This DIY Heart Succulent Planter combines my love for plants and my love for love. I am working hard to share this love with my boys and this project was perfect for that. They were able to work independently with me gently instructing them and were so proud of what they created when they were done. Check out this quick tutorial if you are ever interested in trying this for yourself or with kids!

Supplies: Small rocks (for the bottom of the container if there are no drainage holes), heart tins (I picked mine up from Dollar Tree), succulents, potting mix (specifically designed for cacti/succulents), activated charcoal (this helps with drainage)

How cute are these little tins? And they only cost $1! I can think of so many cute little crafts and projects to do with these. I probably should have stocked up when I was at the store.

Step 1: Remove the lids to the tins and layer the bottom of the container with rocks.

Step 2: Add a layer of activated charcoal on top of the rocks. This stuff can get a little messy! It is not difficult to clean up but you may want to wear clothing that you don’t mind getting messed up.

Step 3: Add your soil and succulents. Make sure you are very gentle with the roots and lightly remove the soil that may be stuck to the roots.

Note: This portion could be a little challenging for little/rough hands. We did lose a few petals along the way… thankfully most of them survived!

Step 4: Arrange your succulents however you like. Fill in additional soil wherever needed.

Step 5: You may want to add a little water, but remember that succulents do not like their roots drenched in water.

Step 6: Give to someone you love or enjoy for yourself!

How long will the succulents be happy in these small containers before needing to be transplanted?

Succulents don't need a deep space for their roots, do they? If not, I would think these adorable little tins will be fine. I have never planted succulents, so just asking...Too cute!! And love the idea the children got involved..Way to go, mom!!
