So last year we made planters (you’ll see on my profile we documented them) and we left space to add gates but we are only getting round to making them now!

so we have done a step by step for you to follow!

This is the space where we want the gate

Best gate hardware

If you're making your own gate this you'll want this highly reviewed gate hardware that Amazon reviewers swear by!

So we used a stake to catch the lock for the gate

A stake driver is a huge help!!!!

Place the stake where you want it

place the stake driver on top & lift it up & down until the state is where you need it!

Measure your space

we used 6 foot long pieces of wood as this was the height we wanted the gates

We placed the two end planks at the end of the tape - your perimeter for the gate & then divided the rest of the space evenly to put the other planks in with the same amount of space left between them

Then we placed another plank over the top & measured it and cut it (using 2 planks one for the top one for the bottom)

Measure & cut

we used our circular saw which was super quick but if you only have a hand saw that will work perfect too!!!

Drill the first plank in first

Using a drill to screw it in securely

Then switch to the other side before securing the middle plank!!

Continue screwing the bottom plank to them

Just keep screwing! icon

Stand it up and make sure it fits before finishing it

To give it more structure we added the “Z” shape that you see on most gates

measure, Mark and cut

Measure the top and the bottom

Cut

Cut the bottom and top!

Screw it with more screws

Last screw - before we stained it!!!

2 coats of fence paint and then we Attached the hinges to the gate first

Attach the lock to the gate before hanging the gate

Attach the top hinge to the fence

Continue with the 3 hinges

Because our post was at an angle we had to just mark where we needed a hole for the lock to close & we used a chisel to make a hole

And made sure it was able to fit & close tightly!

And there you have our gate - made & hung oursleves!!!!
