Wildlife - Black swallowtail caterpillars

These are black swallowtail caterpillars that were on my parsley at the end of last year. I had over 60 in all and kept them alive through a cold snap with a box and light over the plants. I really enjoyed watching the female lay the eggs, then the caterpillars hatch and grow and then disappear to winter over as chrysalis.

I've always just picked them off the grass and put them on my shrubs near the house... they form the chrysalis on the side of the house, then we have beautiful butterflies....The caterpillars are reddish orangey and the butterflies are black.... Thru the years I taught my kids and now my grandkids to help mother nature by picking them up and putting them near the house instead of running them over with the lawnmower.....

Raising butterflies is addictive and rewarding! :-D Thanks so much for taking care of these Black Swallowtails. They were the first species we began raising indoors many years ago! :-)
