In order to save a few pennies my Dear Hubs installed a timer on our eletcric hot water tank. The timer can be bought at box stores and lets you decide when your hot water tank will heat water vs. cycling on & off. It comes with a clock (pc 2) and pins to set "on" & "off " for 2 time periods. Ours runs for 3 hours in the late aft.-if we have need for more hot water, there is an override switch so you can just turn it on as needed. Going on vacation? Use the override switch to shut it off completely while you are away! Turn it back on when you get home and by the time you are done unpacking you will have hot water.

@ Woodbridge-thankyou for giving details about the timer...I could have tried but lack the facts and finesse.:) We do also use and suggest using a thermal wrap or blanket. Fortunately for us about every 10 years the electric co. will send you one free for completing and mailing back a survey about your electric needs and usage.
