How to Prune Hydrangeas
We've got several beautiful Annabelle hydrangea bushes in our garden, and we wanted to share how to care for for these blooming plants in the autumn once the growing season ends. And read more about how to prune hydrangeas at our blog post link at the end!
For a bushier plant with fewer but larger blooms, pruning in autumn once it stops blooming will help encourage new growth and blossoms the following spring. Regular maintenance of hydrangeas will help them flourish for years to come.
Here's where we started with our hydrangeas. Big white blooms, but the plants were a little floppy and overgrown.
We wanted to keep the flowers coming back each year, but try and make the bushes more compact and contained.
Once the flowers had dried and turned brown, we pruned the branches and stems pretty aggressively. The remaining plants were about 24 inches from the ground after we were done trimming.
It was a little nerve-wracking to cut down this showpiece of the garden so much, but it's necessary to keep these hydrangeas coming back each year without becoming overgrown.
This pruning method really works! Our Annabelle hydrangeas came back this summer smaller but bushier and bloomier than ever.
