Antique Revamp! Quilted Patchwork Upholstery

If you follow me, you'll have noticed I'm on a bit of a roll. Loving patchwork upholstery. Paired with a real antique; it's even better.
This is Real Milk Paint Co 'Peacock'. I painted it straight on with no bonding agent for a nice chippy look to match the age and style of the chair.
The lighting is awful, but check out the detail! The milk paint came off just as Id hoped and really accented the carving. I also love how the modern upholstery contrasts with the rustic look of the chair.
A really pretty quilted floral on back. Teal and pink: always a winner

I am hoping to reupholster a wingback chair using pieced quilt weight cotton fabrics. How do you suggest reinforcing the pieced panels to make them a little more substantial? I thought about quilting them with a flannel backing and no batting before cutting my pieces. Any thoughts?
