$49 Front Door Makeover

Catherine
by Catherine
This is how our front doors looked when we bought our house. (Yes, we have two front doors and no we don't know why!) There wasn't anything particularly wrong with them, but we thought they were a little boring. So we made a few changes...
Here's what we did:

.

1 – Painted the outside doors “Classic Royal Blue” by Valspar. We gave it at least 4 coats of paint. (Update: no chips or scratches whatsoever 1 year later!)

.

2 – Painted the inside of one of the doors for an added pop of color inside.

.

3 – Purchased a “hello” decal from Etsy (link is in my blog!)

.

4 – Purchased a “W” Monogram from Dali Decals (link is in my blog!). We customized it to be reversed, so it would show correctly through the window from the inside. We also had it shrunk down to a 12″ diameter so it would fit on our window.

.

5 – After applying the decal to the inside, we used Rust-Oleum Glass Frosting Spray to frost over the decal and rest of the window.

.

6 – That didn’t work. The spray came out blotchy on the window and we had to scrape it all off (Let me just tell you, removing this stuff was NOT fun!)

.

7 – Repeated #5 & #6 three times (I was hopeful it would get better, okay?)

.

8 – Purchased Valspar Glass Frosting Spray and tried one last time. BIG SUCCESS!

.

9 – Applied 3-4 “wet coats” (5-10 min between each coat) until the glass was fully frosted and evenly covered. Then we let the whole thing dry for about an hour.

.

10 – Carefully peeled off the W decal, including all of those tiny little circles around the edge (it was worth it!)

.

Here’s how it turned out.
A little bit closer now...
I love the way the W came out.
Our pup has sadly passed away since this project was completed, but I had to include one of him and his oh-so-welcoming face :)

Did you make the "hello" decal if so how or where did you buy it?

Two front doors, maybe your house was divided at one point before you owned it ?

I grew up in a circa 1860 home that had a single exterior door but two interior doors. One door led to the kitchen while the other was at a right angle and led to the parlor, used as our living room. All the other homes on the street were very similar. My grandmother, my mom and her sisters, who lived in the same area, said you could close off the kitchen to strong odors and to the heat especially in summer. That kept the rest of the house cool. In the winter, the doors were kept open as well as the 2nd door at the opposite end of the kitchen that also opened into the parlor. When we visited Colonial Williamsburg I noticed the kitchens were in totally separate buildings for the same reasons—keeping kitchen odors in check as well as keeping the major gathering spaces cool in summer & warm in winter. A simple strategy in those days before air fresheners and air conditioning.
