DIY Modern Rustic Wood Lamp

I love lamp. In particular this DIY modern rustic wood lamp that now sits pretty on my nightstand.
My dad actually had this piece of salvaged wood just hanging out in his basement, and every time I would go visit him I would stare at it and think about what it could become.
I thought that the height was perfect for a lamp, especially since the bottom was pretty flat.
The last time I was visiting my pops he saw me staring at the piece of lumber all googley eyed, and told me I could have it since he hadn’t done anything with it yet. The rest is history :)

Here is the before photo of the piece of wood. I thought the height was perfect for a lamp and the bottom was already really flat.
The first thing I did was pick up an extra long drill bit and drilled a hole through the center. You can drill in at a diagonal but we drilled straight down.
Here is the piece of wood with the hole drilled in.
I had picked up a lamp kit from the hardware store which was super easy to install by following the directions included.
The threaded pipe {IP zinc plated nipple} that came with my lamp kit wasn't quite long or sturdy enough so I picked up a pack of assorted sizes and used a longer one.
I wanted to add a modern touch to my rustic lamp so I placed it inside an old plastic container filled with paint. I only left it in there for a few minutes and then gently removed it and placed it on some wax paper to dry.
I took a textured lamp shade I had on hand and spray painted it blue to add some color the lamp and our room.
Here is the lamp shade painted dark blue.
Here is the finished lamp in our bedroom, and sitting on one of our recently updated nightstands. UpcycledTreasures.com

I recently acquired a chunk of wood from a civil war aged building, and was wondering what to do with it!! Can't wait to try this! Thanks!!
