Build your own stacked stone fire pit with rustic benches and tables made from logs. This project was completed over two days and transformed a weedy slate patio into a family gathering place! First step ~ Clear the area! Ours was a weedy old patio.
Second step ~ Use a piece of string tied to a nail to make the size circle you want your fire pit to be. (Put nail in center of firepit area, draw your circle and lay the first course of stones)
Third step ~ Use a level and continue to dry stack the stones. We had a pallet of Pennsylvania Blue Stone and had enough for 5 courses on the firepit and a small wall. We put a small bag of builder's sand in the pit. (the firepit alone took about 1 pallet)
Fourth Step ~ screw cut lumber into stumps for benches and use taller stumps for tables.

Hi, we did this years ago. The look is great but not very safe. We had a fire going one night for a few hours, when one of the stones obviously got too hot. This stone POPPED and a fair size piece actually flew faster than Superman and chipped a brick on the house! Inches from our sliding doors!!! We were caught off guard but thankful no one got hurt. We replaced all stone with brick and left over garden stone, only the top is the flat stone now..
if you build this, just please keep my story in mind. It may never happen, but it only has to happen once to really hurt someone.
