A DIY kitchen makeover on a small budget

Buying a fixer upper was something we always wanted to do. With a budget of just $5000.00 for our whole house we knew we were going to have to get crafty to make this kitchen work
This was the first day of the kitchen remodel. We had our work cut out for us
I wanted a regular oven and this kitchen desperately needed a pantry
New cabinets were not an option for us so we decided to paint the old ones. A kit from the hardware store gave the old knotty pine cabinets a nice antique look.
New countertops would have blown our tiny budget as well. We recycled and pieced together some corian countertops from a family member who was doing a kitchen remodel as well.
The one new appliance we bought was a refrigerator but it looked so huge in our kitchen. We decided to make a breakfast bar out of an extra piece of corian we had left over. It helps take your eye away from the giant refrigerator.
My husband built a custom pantry door
We used two different kinds of backsplash tile. These 3x6 subways were the cheapest I could find. Thank goodness for family friends who know how to set and grout tile!
All of our appliances (besides the refrigerator) were received second hand from family and friends.
It's still a work in progress but the power of DIY is amazing!!
