We bought a foreclosure house and after looking at it and getting opinions from family and friends we bought the house. Of course our family and friends said not to buy it, they said it would be way to much work. But my husband and I saw that this house could be beautiful with a lot of work! We started moving in a year ago and the kitchen wasn't done. My husband made me a temporary kitchen with a sink and countertops and some cabinets that were given to us.
The kitchen when we bought the house.
After removing cabinets, countertops, the so called back splash we noticed they had slat boards on the outside walls.
Removed all the slat boards and put up plywood. This wasn't an easy task as the kitchen sits off the ground as we have a basement under the kitchen.
We removed the drop down ceiling they had in there. The ceiling was made out of rough cut lumber, so it wasn't all that even. We had to cut some of it down so we could have a level ceiling
Adding the drywall and lighting. We chose can lights due to our ceilings are only 8 foot ceilings, and my husband is 6 foot, we didn't want him to hit his head on any of the lights.
Next step was to build a walk in pantry and add drywall to the walls. This wasn't a weekend process. I think it took us a year to get this far. As we were paying cash for everything as we didn't want to be in debt.
Finally we have drywall!
Finally we were able to buy the cabinets for the kitchen. Installing them in a house that isn't exactly level wasn't fun, but with a little bit of determination we were able to get them all leveld
wall cabinets installed!
After a lot of discussion over countertops, I wanted something different. I really wanted concrete but my husband was scared of the weight of the concrete due to the cabinets, we agreed upon wooden countertops. After 3 days of gluing, waiting for it to dry, sanding, and more sanding we finally were able to install them.
Finished countertops
We also did a different color on the island and a different type of wood. We knew we wanted the island to stand out. So we choose to go natural and stain the island the same color as the main countertops. We used Waco Butcher block sealer on all the countertops, therefore it is food safe.
Finally after years of work we are almost done with the kitchen. We need to add a blacksplash and hopefully next year we can buy all new appliances.
Almost finished kitchen
My husband jokes and says since the house is almost done, we can start thinking of selling it and looking for another remodel. I just think to myself, no way. I am going to sit and enjoy this house!
