Orange Pomanders & the Scents of Christmas

To make our home merry and bright these Holidays I made my own Christmas decorations. My kids helped me make orange pomanders and dried orange and cinnamon ornaments.
To make the ornaments you start by drying sliced oranges in the oven overnight. Our oven was set at about 75 degrees Celsius or 170 Fahrenheit.
The next day you simply attach a cinnamon stick to each slice of orange with some twine. Et viola, homemade Christmas decorations that smell divine!
We made also made pomanders with oranges and cloves-they smell wonderful, especially when placed on a platter with some evergreens and tea light candles.
The house really smells like Christmas now!

I have a Pomander Ball that is at least 25 years old! I just roll it in fresh spices and brush off the extra. I used Orris Root to preserve the balls. You need to order it on line. It is poisonous. Just use gloves and mix with your spices. The cloves will become a solid ball when the orange shrinks. Put the orange/clove ball in a PAPER bag with spices and Orris Root and shake every day for a few weeks. Do not use a zip lock, they will rot. I use about one teaspoon of Orris root to one regular jar of cinnamon. Cover most of the orange with cloves 1 quarter to one half inches apart.
