How to Make a Faux Brick Wall

When we moved back to our old farm house, we wanted our teen son to love his space. He loves WWE and superheroes, but that may not last, so we decided to go with a man cave, alley, industrial theme. We started with making a brick wall. Veneer and wall paper were too expensive, so we decided to make our own.
Here is the boring 1950's room, complete with Montgomery Ward Drapes and semi-shag carpet. Not cool for a teenage boy!
We made marks on a ruler to help us measure our grout lines (that would be were our masking tape goes.)
We painted the walls gray, and we mixed a brown stain, to make the brick wall a bit darker and this would serve as the base coat of paint and will become our "grout." We used our measuring stick and masking tape to mark off the "bricks." We also made the boy participate so he will appreciate the work it takes to make his room "COOL" and to rethink his decision if he starts to grow tired of it :)
Finished marking the "bricks." The boy decided he was happy with it like this, no need for more work . . . too bad, son, time to do the FUN part!
We started with red, ivory, pumpkin, black and brown and then started mixing paint to come up with brick colors. We wanted to mimic the Old Chicago brick look so no one color would be too overwhelming.
EWWW, pink, mom you gotta be kidding!
Hmm, what color is next?
Finally finished painting!!! Let it dry well, so you don't peel off the paint with the masking tape.
Now, just peel the tape and decorate! Viola, your own brick wall!!!
