A Simple Solution to Gain More Space on Your Mantle

Placing seasonal decorations on my mantle was always frustrating because it was so shallow. We remedied the problem by simply getting a board cut to the desired size, adding trim similar to what was already on the mantle, painting it all out and gluing it to the existing mantle.
Mantle depth increased from 7" to 10"
Dry-fitting the unpainted board
We attached the painted board to the existing mantle using Elmers Carpenters Glue and left the clamps in place overnight.
Original depth mantle
The mantle all decked out for Fall.

I did this but added a few screws. Don't trust that the wood glue is going to hold forever and if I put anything with any bit of weight it might come crashing down.
