DIY a Pergola This Spring!

$400

Medium
When we moved into our 90s house five and a half years ago, the backyard needed some serious help. We totally overhauled it : sodded, removed a broken hot tub, re-landscaped with native plants, and added a pond. But there was still one eyesore that drove us crazy, the weird, flimsy, weathered, 5' tall "pergola" that was around the hot tub. We couldn't afford thousands of dollars to have a nice pergola built, so we did it ourselves in a couple of weekends for under $400! You won't believe the before and after!
The old, decrepid, and short "pergola" that remained from when the hot tub was in this location. Completely useless, and completely ugly!
Since we used pressure-treated lumber (we're one mile from the coast), we let it sit for a few months before staining. After a coat of SW "Hawthorne" stain, it's finally all finished and looks amazing!

I can hardly remember what we had before and our backyard finally looks complete now. We are so proud we DIYed this and it's still our favorite project!
