Tie-dye t-shirts as a fun summer craft project you can do with your kids. Then turn the t-shirts into a picnic blanket.
You can use old or thrifted t-shirts (or buy new ones) to make this picnic blanket. The t-shirts are soft and make a comfortable picnic or beach blanket for summer outings.
Tie-dye t-shirts. I used 6 large t-shirts. The size of your t-shirts and the desired size of your picnic quilt will determine how many t-shirts you need. You can personalize your quilt by choosing your favorite dye colors and designs.
Using iron-on interfacing is the key to keeping your t-shirt fabric stabilized so you can easily sew it into a quilt. Because you use large squares and let the tie-dye patterns make the quilt pattern, this is an easy sewing project.
This soft picnic blanket is perfect for summer outings.

The iron on interfacing works great, Linda. Have fun crafting, your running shirt will be a useful keepsake.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
What did you use on the back of this blanket? Is the back waterproof so the blanket does not get wet from damp grass?
I’m new to sewing. If you are using the iron-on interfacing, are you attaching it directly to the quilt back material and the t-shirt squares? If so, then are you not using quilt batting between the t-shirt front and the quilt back?
