We're stationed in Germany and we wanted to install a fireplace but the cost of installation was upwards of 10,000 euros. So we built out own. We used the example from blogger Lauren of Bless'er House as a visual guide but since we didn't have the mantel and surround we needed to draw our own plans. We are pretty happy with how it turned out and the cost was about $300.
Finished Fireplace in a Neutral Room.
Blank wall and beagle looking for food, as usual.:-)
We first built the foundation using 2x4s and built a frame. Then we tiled and grouted it.
We framed out the fireplace surround using 2x4s and 1x8s.
The mantel was a piece of barn wood that we found in the garbage.
We added a mimicked shiplap to the top so a tv could be hung and the wires dropped behind.
Once we tiled the area we used clamps until the glue dried. We framed out about the mantel and created a shiplap look so later a tv could be hung and the cords could e dropped behind.
We found logs in the woods by our house and my husband cut them into 2 inch rounds and we glued them to a graphite painted background that comes out to access the electric.

Did you just go over the crown with the ship lap or cut the crown?
