Preparing for a Drought

The Midwest is looking at another drought this summer. The recent snow storms have helped, but we will need a bit more to avoid dry conditions. At any rate, it doesn't hurt to be prepared with some tips for dealing with a dry weather.
Do NOT:
-Fertilizing
-Watering every day
-Water over night
Do:
-Cut the grass higher
-Water in heavy amounts once a week
-Let the grass for dormant
-Cater to plant types

We put half our front yad into pinestraw beds about 20 years ago and use that area to hold the leaves that come down every fall instead of bagging them and filling up a land fill. We have not put down pinestraw for years! Our mowing is minimal...our backyard is natural...a jungle! Our screen porch and deck are like tree houses. We have a "Mountain Retreat" right here at home. It it only about 12 feet off the ground, but the lot then slopes. Love it! We never intend to sulpture it ...I tried before we fenced part of the black lab! Anyone with an active dog knows what it looks like now! She is worth it!

The first drought I went through in Houston several years ago didn't go so well for the yard. I did everything wrong from lack of experience. Watering everyday in small amounts not only didn't help the grass but it also promoted mold and fungus growth.
