Lived with this nightmare bath for nearly 11 years... FINALLY got it done (DIY)... LOVE IT NOW! I started collecting ideas for this two years ago, could not get hubs on-board. Finally threatened to rip the exhaust fan out and throw it thru the window, it sounded like a truck every morning when he would get in the shower and I was trying to sleep! He actually thanked me for "forcing him" to start the project when we took the old shower doors off, it was so awful... it should not have taken five months to complete but he's not getting any younger so it was a weekend job, and not every weekend... three Phases because I took a LOT of before/after pix!
UGLY OLD ... it begins....
old shower, base was shot, doors were shot, mold
wallpaper peeling, started removing
original (previous owners) $9 shower exhaust fan, sounded like a diesel truck
HORRIBLE SHOWER BASE we could not remove without gutting which hubs did not want to do. Original boring beige tile.
Horrible drain in shower
scrubbed base with TSP solution and bleach, lightly sanded, wiped down with tack cloth before applying epoxy
Plumbers putty to raise level so water does not sit around drain
pulled ceramic soap dish off wall and re-rocked
two coats of two-part epoxy, ran a fan and opened windows and wore a mask, the fumes are pretty heavy..
came out great!

The problem with leaky, moldy old showers is they attract termites! We had a similar tile in our shower in the home we recently bought. We weren't planning on riping it out until we took off the baseboard for new floors and there they were, termites! So we ended up gutting the room and now it's beautiful! Good thing the termite company that did the inspection also noted they were above the shower in attic and missed, so they paid for the treatment!
