My poor whirlpool tub has had the same caulking around it for (gulp) 17 yrs! I must say it looked pretty good for the longest time, but then really needed to be refreshed. I noticed small cracks and it just did not look good anymore. And for a clean freak like myself, I had to tackle taking out the old and putting on he new. This was super easy and I thought to myself why did i not do this earlier? Now I'm pretty good with a caulking gun I must admit...but they make several products that do not use a caulking gun...so don't be scared just do it. Here are my before and after pics.
Before you can see how it has separated and small cracks...
I took a blade and ran along the top edge and bottom along tub to get old caulking out.
Again you see the gaps and after getting some old caulking gone.
Yuck! Looks gross and needs to be refreshed...
