Before and After Thrift Store Chest in Grey and Gold

by The Painted Drawer by Suzanne Bagheri
(IC: blogger)
I spotted this chest of drawers at a local thrift store. However, it was missing its feet and looked very boxy sitting on the floor. It was in pretty bad shape but I knew I could do something with it. The chest is marked Davis Cabinet Company, Tennessee.

I used Grey chalk paint and highlighted the details in gold. I also applied both dark and clear waxes to give depth of color and a beautiful, aged look.

The chest had great lines with fluting and gorgeous old drawer pulls.
I was thrilled to find its missing feet in the bottom drawer - so lucky! - and decided to bring the piece home.
It took a lot of wood filler, sanding and shoring up to get the chest ready to paint. The feet were screwed back in and I added wood glue to keep them secure and tight. The top was in really bad shape and needed a lot of sanding to get smooth again.
Here is the "after"! I used french grey and accented the details in gold. Annie Sloan French Linen and Martha Stewart Vintage Gold.
The gold ties in nicely with the drawer pulls. They are gorgeous and add such charm to the piece.
The distressing also highlighted the details and lines.
I am always thrilled when a piece transforms with paint and this one certainly did.
