I purchased a purse holder (clear plastic) from Bed Bath and Beyond with a thick hook for the closet and it now holds about 10 purses. It really works well for me.
I have mine on the top shelf in the closet, above clothes. I use dividers to keep them upright. I place them in the bag and stuff with tissue paper to protect them and keep their shape.

If you have extra wall space in your closet, you can easily put Command Hooks on the wall and hang them from those.
Mine are in boxes and on a shelf in my closet. I have a lot, so stacking boxes make the most efficient use of space.
