My daughter just bought a new memory foam mattress .... read the WARNINGS VERY CLOSELY!!! They are oh so comfy, and yet oh so dangerous. It states on the paperwork, box, and tags, that these mattresses are HIGHLY flameable that can result in a fast, intense fire that cannot be extinguished! The fumes when unpacking can be toxic...JUST READ IT ALL!!

Very good points, @Therese C. Memory foam mattresses absolutely need to "air out" as the mattress needs to off gas. As far as flammability, all mattresses can catch fire and be devastatingly destructive. Make sure to be especially careful with matches, lighters, candles, space heaters, and smoking materials in (and around) the bed.

I tried a memory foam mattress and I sank down in it so that it was hard to turn over. I will stick with regular mattresses and box springs.

Purchase natural latex mattress and you won't be sorry. It's spendy but the money will be well spent. Our old inner spring mattress worsened my back problems. The new natural latex mattress has made all the difference in the world. Do some research and you'll find it has many health benefits.

we bought a memory foam mattress over 2 years ago. paid $1200 for it. Within a very few months, 7 I had a dip where I sleep, and a hump in the middle. Contacted the dealer then the manufacturer, had to measure the dip. Wellll, that is not easy since memory foam puffs back up and you cant really measure the dip accurately. They have a "rule" it has to compress so much and you have to take a picture of it before they will honor their warranty. Bull puckey! We found it compresses as you get in it, then puffs up when you get out, however the compression is still there, even tho it doesn't look like it. no customer satisfaction. If I had to do it again, I would get a regular mattress, then buy a memory foam topper, so i can get rid of it when it fails.

I bought a Temperpedic Ergo bed 5 years money I've ever spent. I have back problems and this bed has helped immensely. I will never go back to a traditional mattress. The mattress is in great shape after 5 years...we have no compression spots anywhere. I hear a lot of jokes about my "craftmatic" bed but being able to move the head and foot of the bed up and down is so helpful for my back and for my husband's sinus problems. I can no longer sleep flat and wonder how I ever did?

I bought a memory foam mattress and have hated it from the 1st night. I'm more achy now than ever. I'll get a Sleep Number bed nest time.

I have been sleeping on a sleep comfort bed for almost 4 decades when I bought it from an ad in the back of "Better Homes and Gardens" before they ever had stores and it became "SELECT COMFORT". I love it and have never had trouble getting a good night's sleep. But my sister went from king to queen and Select Comfort now has that foam on top of their air mattresses and she hates her new bed. A lot of older folks have trouble with memory foam because they sink down in it and it makes it difficult to turn over and get out of bed!

That's true I have trouble getting in and out of bed but we lowered the frame and it helped. I love my Memory foam mattress. I have had back surgery and knee replacements and my hips are full of arthritis d it since getting the mattress I don't have the pain in my hips as much.

Just thought I would share this with anyone who cares to read it: No doubt about it, memory foam mattresses are comfy. They're firm, conform to the shape of your body while you sleep and supposedly contain dust-mite resistance material (allegedly great for kids with asthma). But disturbing reports have emerged on the dangerous health hazards of memory foam -- especially for children. Your basic mattress is made of latex, air, water and various natural and chemical fibers. But memory foam mattresses are made from polyurethane foam. This material emits volatile compounds that can cause respiratory problems and skin irritation. What's more, formaldehyde (a chemical in the adhesives that hold the mattress together) has been linked to lung, nose and throat cancers. Memory foam is also loaded with cotton pesticides and flame-retardant toxic chemicals, which can cause cancer and nervous system disorders. Read more:

@Nancy I had mentioned their flammability in my previous comment. You couldn't pay me enough to use a memory foam mattress. It scares the feathers out of me.

We got rid of our temperpedic because it made our backs worse and we were too hot. Our best ever mattress, the one we have now, is traditional innerspring with a new type of foam top layer that dissipates heat from the body. We also got pillows of the same material. The great thing is this mattress set was only 1000.00! We went to a local store that has a sleep test machine to narrow down our choices.

  • Briana Briana on Mar 23, 2014
@Leslie Herbert - The heat problem is my concern. I tend to get hot at night and I wonder if the foam mattress will make it worse. Right now I have a pillow top mattress.

    • Therese C Therese C on Mar 25, 2014
@Briana I bought a Gel-Cool mattress topper for my bed and I sleep very cool now, so I bought one in a twin size for my grandson (5 yrs old) that lives with me. He suffers from Febrile Seizures, and I absolutely cannot let his body get over heated. Smartest investment I ever made! I bought a queen sized for me and a twin for Achidan at Costco. Mine was $200 and his was $149. Not a bad price for sleeping comfy!

I have a Sertapedic (same as Temperpedic) and I love it. It can be a little warm, but I've found that I don't hit "hard" spots like I did with an innerspring mattress. But, the pillow is probably my favorite item... I find it difficult to sleep without it!!!

  • WannaBGardener WannaBGardener on Mar 23, 2014
I purchased the TemperPedic and it developed an impression where I slept after 3 years; a waste of money. Now I have the Sleep Number and I love it, sleep like a rock.

This question has certainly highlighted that we're all so different and our needs are not at all the same. Thanks for sharing, everybody!!

We have had a latex for about 20 years and the wifey wanted something new and improved. Two new mattresses later, and well over a thousand dollars, many "discussions" later.....yep, we are now sleeping on the "old, worn-out, 20 years old latex mattress. SHEEEESH!!!!!

My body is full of ariteritis, have had two knees done, a spinel fusion and hips next to go under the knife. My hips hurt so bad and was sleeping in a recliner because my pillow top matteress drove me crazy. Bought a gel memory form mattress and I tell you the truth, no hips pain and my back is happy. I did get the adjustable bed and like it so I can elevate my head and legs. So far I'm really happy.

My husband and I are both quite large people. We had a very expensive Sterns and Foster innerspring pillow top bed for years. It was very comfortable in the beginning, but after 10 years, it was killing our backs. We just bought a Serta iComfort and it's amazing. I honestly haven't slept this well in years. I have no back, hip or shoulder pain at night. I love it.

I honestly prefer Innerspring mattresses for several reasons. First, I tried to sleep on a memory foam mattress, but it gave me back pain, and it was impossible to sleep on it. I have been talking about it on my mattress blog
