That is a great question. I have worked at 4 furniture stores. Most really got you on the mattresses. I was going to manage for a large mattress store and not sure if I am allowed to say the name of it, but it rhymes with Creepys, Anyway they recently changed their name but not the method and they are the worst. While Amazon is a good source--it is not typically Amazon selling them-they are third parties and what if you aren't comfortable on it--how does it go back? Then what after that? What might be right for my comfort may not be yours-so you do have to try the mattress. The best place I have found is the last place I worked which is Bob's Discount furniture. The prices and quality are great. However, it will help you if you can possibly pick up on your own, as there is a delivery charge. They also have a comfort guarantee and a non prorated guarantee. Mattress firm was the place where we chose a mattress. Several of the stores wanted to play games with their mattresses...such as the warranty would be voided if we did this, that, and the other thing. To void the warranty they said we had to purchase their mattress cover, another said we could not use box springs with their mattress, and then there was the warranty dependant on the price of the mattress.
