Want the fabulous look of a barn door but don't want the expense? You can make one yourself from an interior door! It isn't hard to do and the payoff is huge! Where would use a barn door in your home?
Be sure to watch our video tutorial for complete instructions and helpful tips.
We rounded up an old, solid core door. We love the idea of reusing old things and it's so much better for the environment to reuse. We cut off the edges (to get rid of the hinged insets), filled in the door knob (see blog post), and then cut and glued the 1x4 edges of our barn door to the old door.
Once our frame was in place, we cut and mitered the plywood in 4" strips, making sure to measure each one for a tight fit. For a nicer look, we rounded the edges that butted up against each other. Once everything was lined up, we glued, used brad nails, and added weight to attach. To make sure the edges looked seamless, we used Bondo to fill in gaps and sanded over it.
Once holes are filled and sanded, it's time to paint! So many color choices here. Once your paint is dried and set, you can attach your barn door hardware. Please see blog post for information about adding spacers for thicker doors.
Now, you get to enjoy your amazing barn door!
