Need ideas for storage + tv for my living room

Question

I'm wanting ideas on how to build my own storage for under my tv. I'd ideally like to hang my tv on the wall and have some type of storage underneath it. Right now, my tv is sitting on a tv console and it's WAYYYY to short. To change channels, control volume, or do anything with our cable or blu ray player you have to hold your arm straight up in the air and point the remote down. It's irritating to say the least. I've found some pictures on pinterest, and around the web that incorporate open shelving beside and or below the tv which i like, but wanted to see if anyone else had any other ideas. I'm looking to do something totally (or mostly) DIY as I just got some gift cards to home depot for christmas. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I've also been looking for ideas related to yours. My husband opted for a larger t.v. for his 15-years of service bonus. Hopefully some ideas we're considering may help inspire you. (1) Revamp an old dresser. The top two drawers will be removed and a shelf added for the DVD, cable box, and game console. The other drawers will stay for entertainment storage. (2) Floating shelves. (3) Either the dresser or floating shelves idea flanked with book shelves for added storage and display. Either way we plan to wall mount and invest in a conduit so the cords will run behind the wall. Hope this helps!

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your space. To deal with the remote control issues, have you considered an RF universal remote? What that does is give you the ability to control your devices from a longer distance away, without the need to point directly at them. This will eliminate the issue of your console being too short. I think wall mounted storage shelves are a great idea. :)

There have a been a few great 'dresser' conversions here on Hometalk http://www.hometalk.com/diy/mid-century-modern-dresser-turned-entertainment-center-510678 http://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/dressers/old-trashed-dresser-turned-into-an-entertainment-center-427984 getting the TV up on the wall is a great Idea. Better still is installing a wire chase in the wall so you do not have cables hanging down from it.
