Upcycle Floor Lamp to Coat Rack

Here's our starting point. An old floor lamp with attached glass table. Ornate and brassy--not the look we are going for!

Here's a closer look at the tabletop. This will be used upside down in the final project!

The first step is to totally deconstruct the entire lamp. All these parts easily unscrew. We discovered that the parts are interchangeable, meaning we could discard that ornate part under the tabletop and replace it with one of the pieces from above the tabletop.

We are basically making a "slipcover" for the metal lamp stem pieces. We cut a piece of PVC for the bottom and then a longer piece that will go above the tabletop.

All the PVC pipe was spray painted as well as the metal base. After all the pieces dried, it was time to assemble. Be sure to watch the video for an explanation of the spray painting hack.

We etched a power button symbol on the glass with a diamond tip rotary tool bit. The wireless charger will go underneath this symbol. It is taped to the bottom. The underside of the glass also gets a coat of black spray paint.

We marked the placement of the coat hooks, drilled pilot holes and then hand screwed the hooks into place.

We used expanding spray foam to adhere the PVC pipe to the metal lamp stem. This sets up in about 15 minutes to create a strong bond.

We added the second PVC pipe and secured it in the same way with the spray in foam. To charge a phone, you simply lay a phone on the symbol. (Note: all phones can not be charged this way.)

There are four hooks for hats, jackets, bags, and purses.

The tabletop is a great place to store keys and sunglasses.
