How to build a chicken run, not a coop?

I am a Accredited License Child Care provider. I garden and cook from scratch. So it made since to get chickens when there was the egg recall. My children in care love taking care if the chickens and getting eggs daily. Our current chicken area is not kid friendly and not as good of a enclosed area as needed to keep our chickens in and safe. Any advice or ideas would be hugely appreciated. Thanks Stacey and her child care. Colorado Springs , CO.

Any secure open fenced area with a cover to keep out hawks -- you can make it from light weight wire on a frame so you can move it to different areas of your yard; if you want it tall enough for the children to walk into it, portable probably won't work ... you will need to coop them at night and let out every morning ..but eventually they will destroy what grass you have in that area .

Chicken run we had was a small area attached to the coop. Coop had boxes for the hen's to lay eggs. Open area on side was large enough for adult to walk through but door could be closed and smaller hole in door for chickens to go out into the run. You need posts set in ground about every 3-4 feet. Attach "chicken wire" to sides and top, pull tight. Also put a board around to deter dogs, raccoons, from digging under to get in. You can let chickens out during day but be aware loose chickens have a habit of hiding a nest to raise young ones.

That’s what I did almost , I made a big hutch with pallets and then let the birds have the whole yard, when my flick went from50 to 20 I knew I had to do something to keep them safe from Coyotes. So I built a chicken run with pallets, four pallets long to two wide off the side of the hutch, the pallets keep out the coyotes and I covered the top with mesh wire .. I’m going to let that be their outdoor space now..
