Ideas for gazebo area off of pool area (to the right of the pool)

Question

Wanted grass under the gazebo, but it won't grow due to the shade, which we need! Walkway around pool is pea gravel, edging of pool is Arizona Buckskin. Budget @1000.00. The gazebo is actually about a foot closer to the fence now. Need to allow plenty of room for table with chairs for outdoor parties, so don't want a ledge that people could trip on or fall back from. Want to keep as much green as I can, but possibly could do lots of potted plants on a hard surface. Any ideas???

I would center the gazebo in that space, that way you can plant around it, reinforcing the idea that is an outdoor room. That's where you should focus on creating the green. That is not a spot for grass, as you have found out.

I don't think i'd introduce another material. I would either use what's around your pool, or the pea gravel. Or use pavers set in pea gravel. Something to tie them together.

Another option would be to back the gazebo up the corner on right and use the fencing as walls so you can decorate them, hang plants on them,etc. for budget friendly, unless you have it in budget for more pea gravel (and use edging to keep it in place), I would look at building a small deck for under the gazebo and you could even screw the gazebo onto the small deck. I would use the outside corner to plant some sort of vining plant (maybe mandevilla?) and use the other 2 outside corners touching the fence as a back drop for maybe something big-like big pots filled with lots of flowers or even a shrub like arborvitae or some evergreen for green all year and add annuals such as pentunias to give color. I would make your outdoor kitchen area by the house so you have easy access or just move closer to the pool area.

Put in some concrete or just dig and even out, use the astro turf stuff. I used sand and pavers at my house. Worked wonderfully.

If you really want grass they do have grass seed just for shaded area. I have used it for a couple years now and works great.

Since you already have a dog-eared wood fence, you could build a floor for your gazebo out of the composite decking material if your budget allows (this will weather to a grey like the fence) and could be easily moved if it is built in 4 small sections. That would allow you to change the layout of that area as your family needs change. (Of course you would need to make sure the area is level for this to work.) I like @Douglas Hunt idea of centering the gazebo and planting around the edges ...also use the fence for vertical plantings to give added dimensions to your planting beds.

Possibly set your smoker grill at an angle across the corner with some sort of counter space on either side, creating an outdoor kitchen area. Please post the finished pictures of your project... you're going to get lots of great input and ideas from the many talented people who visit this site.

Cathy, your Pride of Barbados are GORGEOUS!! How many do you have and how did you keep them alive during the bi-Polar winter? I'm over in Mont Belvieu area. I liked what Douglas Hunt suggested for your 'flooring.' I think using the paver/pea gravel would compliment your pool area nicely. Have you considered the new 'fake' grasses? We covered them every freeze (or close to it). They did freeze above the ground anyway, but we cut them back and they're back in full force--thicker than ever!

We live in Goodyear, AZ and have a cement block fence.  We painted it dark moss green, which you could do with your wooden fence.  It gives the allusion of foliage.  We have stands, which we painted every other one dark fushia and dark teal.  We then added the same color flower pots from Home Depot.  You could skip 6 green fence planks,  paint 2 planks with other color, 6 planks and the next color.  Very pleasing to look out at green rather than a wood color.

If you haven't found a gazebo for your pool area then look for metal gazebo that has ventilation like the OutSunny 2m it's the best fit for your pool area.
