Winter only roof for my pergola

I have spent most of the summer putting up a pergola in my garden which is attached to my shed at the bottom of the garden. Knowing our weather, for the winter I would like to protect it with a clear roof of some sort and most probably remove the same next summer. This would allow me to do jobs outside without getting wet. I do not like the roofing plastic used for conservatories, and ideally I would like a clear view of the sky. I don't have tons of money to spend so any ideas please!

I'm not sure of the type of plastic roofing you mentioned used on conservatories, but the only type I can think of is corrugated clear plastic roofing. In the USA it costs under $25.00 a 2 x 8 foot sheet. http://st.hzcdn.com/fimgs/661113a405b6de31_7807-w228-h228-b0-p0--home-design.jpg

Go on=line to a pool supply co. I purchased a solar pool cover that was huge and heavy duty for around $100.00 Worked perfect.

I'm presently having our front porch, which has a pergola, winterized. There are many covering for the roof that can be applied and we are also having the whole porch screened and with special winter coverings, which can be removed in the spring. We have strong winds and snow in our area, so this will help eliminate having to keep the entrance shovelled. Home Depot and Rona has many ideas for such a project. For our Pergola in the hot summer in order to use it. I purchased a very large tarp from Home depot . This year we put in Bombay/Thane tile for patio from Lowes it is perfect.

Polycarbonate or corrugated plastic?? Idk if that is to what you are referring when you say conservatory plastic... Most hardware/ big box stores can order some type.
